Simple Steps to Win Financially

• Pay yourself first! No one will take care of you better than you when it is time to retire. All long term capital gain should be in a tax shelter such as an IRA.
• Keep your financial life simple so that if you become sick, disabled, or even die, the survivors are well protected financially.
• Keep up with your current bills
• Spend less than you earn
• Build up emergency fund that your promise not to touch unless you have a REAL emergency.
• Save up to pay for things
• Cut up your credit cards and pay off your consumer debts
• Do not finance depreciating items - cars, vacations, dining out, timeshare, even education.
• Pay 20% down on a house, and get a 15 year mortgage or less
• Don't fall for scams, frauds, and get-rich-quick money making schemes, including lottery.
• Maintain a monthly budget, and keep open line of communication with your spouse or your significant other.
• Don't buy anything jointly, unless you are married to that person.
• Purchase appropriate amount of insurances - level-term life, auto, homeowner's, renters, medical, disability, long-term care, etc.  Make sure liability amount is high enough.
• Keep updated will, durable power of attorney, living will, will data form, passports, and funeral directives in a safe spot along with all other insurance, investment, and ownership documents.
• Check to see all beneficiary names are correct on your life insurance, retirement funds, annuities, and will.
• Save up for college fund if you have minor children.
• Stay up with tax rules and changes
